Decorating for Fall: What Not to Do

As a girl who loves fall but has a strong dislike for tacky seasonal décor, I figured I was probably the right person to write this.

Summer is winding down, and in my opinion, the best season of the year is finally here. Crisp mornings, pumpkin spice, chai lattes, chunky sweaters, changing leaves... honestly, it's hard to beat.

What is easy to beat? The annual explosion of giant inflatable ghosts, plastic skeletons climbing roofs, and throw pillows that scream "Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice." Every September it feels like half the neighbourhood transforms into a 2001 Sears catalogue, and my eye starts twitching just a little.

Now, before anyone comes for me—I know your home should make you happy. If a six-foot skeleton brings you joy, by all means, carry on. But if you're after a timeless, elevated look that still feels warm, cozy, and unmistakably fall, here's your guide.

Start Outside

Your front entrance sets the tone before anyone even walks through the door. You don't need twenty-seven pumpkins and a hay bale to let people know it's autumn.

Instead, keep it simple:

• A few real pumpkins in varying sizes.

• Large pots filled with mums or other fall plants

• Branches, dried grasses, or seasonal foliage

• Warm lanterns with LED candles for evening ambiance.

The key is layering natural elements rather than decorating with novelty items. Mother Nature already nailed the fall colour palette—you don't need to improve on it.

Put the Faux Leaves Away (or don’t)

If there's one thing I'd happily retire forever, it's garlands of shiny orange plastic leaves draped across every surface.

Real branches. Real greenery. Dried hydrangeas. Olive branches. Even simple eucalyptus mixed with seasonal stems will always look more sophisticated than something that's been folded into a Rubbermaid bin for the last eleven months.

And yeah - 90% of the stems you have purchased from Homesense look like ****.

Think Less craft store. More countryside estate.

Skip the Seasonal Throw Pillows

This might be controversial...

You do not need a pillow with a pumpkin on it.

Or one that says Gather.

Or Hello Fall.

Or Thankful.

Your home already knows what season it is.

Instead, swap in texture rather than theme. Think boucle, velvet, wool, linen, rich cognac leather, chunky knits, warm taupes, deep olives, burgundy, chocolate brown, and camel. It instantly feels like fall without looking like your sofa got dressed for Halloween.

Bring in Warmth, Not Clutter

Fall decorating isn't about adding more. It's about changing the feeling of your home.

Switch lighter summer accessories for heavier textures. Add candles. Stack a few beautiful coffee table books. Bring in wood, stone, ceramic, aged brass, and woven baskets. Fold a Blacksaw throw over a chair instead of covering every surface with tiny pumpkins.

The goal is for someone to walk in and think, This feels so cozy.

Not, Wow... (insert cricket sound)

Let Nature Be the Decoration

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to buy fall. The best seasonal styling is often the simplest.

Branches collected from your yard.
Fresh apples in a beautiful bowl.
Pears on the kitchen island.
A vase filled with foraged greenery.
A basket of firewood beside the fireplace.

These are the details that make a home feel lived in, layered, and authentic.

My Rule for Seasonal Decorating

Leave the seasonal, worded pillows on the shelf.

A well-designed home shouldn't completely change personalities every season. It should simply evolve.

Add warmth. Add texture. Add candlelight.

Leave the inflatable pumpkin in the garage.

Your house will thank you.
